DIGITAL OBSERVER PROJECT

Background

The Digital Observer Project was formed to develop a computerized fish identification and recording system for the commercial fishing industry in Alaska. The system is intended to replace onboard human observers now employed by various regulatory agencies by using a computer vision system to identify and measure the size and age of fish as they are brought onboard and to maintain an accurate log of the catch including the date, time and location for each fish. The project is jointly funded by the Alaska Science and Technology Foundation and the US Department of Agriculture. The University of Alaska Fairbanks computer science program is partnering with the commercial fishing industry to provide the expertise to develop and test the software component of the fish identification system. This software module will be implemented by UAF graduate students working with a faculty member to achieve an approach to software development which is both cost-effective and timely.
