UAF's Winning Entry in the
UMAP Journal Mathematical Contest in Modelling 1999

Team Members:

This program is the mathematical model we submitted
(along with a 93-page writeup) in the MCM in 1999.
Of the 200-some entries from across the world, the
Mathematical Association of America (MAA) gave our
entry top honors as the best.

For more information on the contest, visit

You can double-click the "mcm.exe" program
to start it, or drag a text file from the "scenarios"
directory onto "mcm.exe". The program is menu-driven,
but has a minimal user interface.

"File" and "Options" are regular Windows-style menus,
but "Stop", "Start", "Reset", and the "Step" menu items
act just like buttons-- click them once, and they go.
To send the red-disk people scrambling for the green-line
exits, just click "Start". To see the action again, click
"Reset". Time steps forward by 0.2 seconds in this little
world, and you can move them one (10, or 100) steps at a
time by clicking the "Step" ("Step10", or "Step100")
button.

If you really feel adventurous, you can edit the text
files in the "Scenarios" folder. We never wrote any
documentation on the format, but we think it's pretty
straightforward. (then again, we're old UNIX hackers)

If you have any questions or comments about the program,
code, or contest, feel free to e-mail me at olawlor@acm.org.
