Required Textbook:
Computer Organization and Design by Patterson and Hennessy (Morgan Kaufmann)

Background: If you concerned about your performance in EE 341 or CS 321, I recommend reading Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software. This is an excellent (and cheap) book that reviews what you should already know.

Topics:

Exams:
There will be a take-home midterm exam handed out Thursday October 7 and due Thursday October 14 and an open-book in-class final exam on Thursday December 16 from 8-10am.

Homework:
Homework will be assigned weekly and is due by 5pm on the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted. Students may discuss possible approaches to problems, specific syntax questions and aspects of debugging. However, all assignments are to be done strictly on an individual basis, unless otherwise specified.

Group Presentation:
The class will be split into groups and each group will be responsible for summarizing a contemporary CPU/system design in a 30 minute presentation to the class. Presentations will be graded on correctness, depth of research and clarity of presentation.

Grading Policy:
Each exam is 25%, homework is 35% and the group presentation is 15% of your score. Final grades will be assigned based on the following percentage intervals:
A - [89.5%, 100%], B - [79.5%, 89.5%), C - [69.5%, 79.5%), D - [59.5%, 69.5%), F - [0.0%, 59.5%)
