Assignment 2 (Video Critique)
Assignment 2 is due at 5 pm Tuesday, September 10. It is worth 40 points.
Procedures
This assignment is to be done individually.
Turn in your answer to the exercise below on the UA Canvas site, under Assignment 2 for this class.
- Your submission must consist of a single file: your critique, in PDF format.
- Your homework submission may not be examined immediately. If you have questions, e-mail me.
Exercise (40 pts): Critique Another Student’s Video Presentation
Purpose
In this exercise you will write a critique of a classmate’s video from Assignment 1. The idea is that you will become more aware of what makes a good or bad presentation, and your classmate will be helped to become a better presenter.
Instructions
Your instructor will e-mail you the URL of a video. Please check as soon as possible whether you are able to download and watch the video. If there is a problem, then notify your instructor immediately.
If all is well, then write a respectful critique of this video, as text (no images required), and turn it in as a PDF document. Your aim is to help the person in the video improve their presentation skills.
Half a page will probably be enough. Certainly, there is no reason to make your critique more than one page long. You must address each of the following.
- Is the presenter’s speech loud enough to hear?
- Is the presenter’s speech clear and understandable? Is the presenter speaking at a reasonable speed? Is the presenter’s speech reasonably modulated: neither a monotone nor excessive?
- Is the presenter facing the camera most of the time? Does the presenter make eye contact with the audience?
- Is the presenter reasonably animated? Do they make use of gestures?
- Is the presentation well organized? Is there a (brief!) introduction, along with a closing? Can a viewer determine quickly what the presenter is talking about?
Notes
- The critiques will not be done anonymously. The student whose video you are critiquing will know who you are.
- Your critique will not affect the presenter’s Assignment 1 grade. Please be honest in your evaluation.
- However, be constructive. The aim is to help the presenter improve their presentation skills, not to tear them down.
- You do not need to send your critique to the presenter. Your instructor will do that.
