CS 471 Fall 2024
Assignment 1 (Video Presentation)
Assignment 1 is due at 5 pm Tuesday, September 3. It is worth 40 points.
Procedures
This assignment is to be done individually.
Turn in your answer to the exercise below on the UA Canvas site, under Assignment 1 for this class.
- Your submission must consist of a single file: your video, in a standard video format.
- Your homework submission may not be examined immediately. If you have questions, e-mail me.
Note. Assignment 2 will involve you critiquing someone else’s video, and someone else critiquing yours. So it is very important that you turn in your video on time. If you do not do so, then you may receive no credit for Assignment 2.
Exercise (40 pts): Create a Video Presentation
Purpose
In this exercise you will create a video of yourself speaking. Your instructor and (if you turn the video in on time) another student in the class will give you feedback on your presentation style.
Instructions
Create a video of yourself spending a minute or two explaining, in English, how to perform some not-too-complicated task. Some possibilities are the following.
- How to choose some product to buy (phone, toothbrush, bicycle).
- How to wash your hands thoroughly.
- How to start a conversation with someone you do not know.
- How to use some tool (vice grips, chopsticks, pipe cutter).
- How to make a simple dish (sandwich, crackers and cheese).
- How to clean something (laundry, car windshield, computer keyboard).
Begin your video with a brief introduction: your name and what the video is about. Similarly end the video with a brief closing.
Your video must be no longer than 5 minutes, but can be significantly shorter.
Your video must show you from the waist up—at least—for most of the time. It must include audio, so viewers can hear you speaking.
The emphasis here is on you speaking. If you were creating a video of this kind to post on the web, then it might include a title screen, text or image overlays, and background music. But do not bother adding such things to this video; just look at the camera and talk.
This is an informal presentation; special dress is not required.
Before turning in your video, make sure your speech is audible. If it is not, then please redo the video.
Evaluation
Your video will be evaluated according to the following criteria.
- Is your speech loud enough to hear?
- Is your speech clear and understandable? Are you speaking at a reasonable speed? Is your speech reasonably modulated: neither a monotone nor excessive?
- Are you facing the camera most of the time? Do you make eye contact with your audience (the camera lens, from your point of view)?
- Are you reasonably animated? Do you make use of gestures?
- Is your presentation well organized? Is there a (brief!) introduction, along with a closing? Can a viewer determine quickly what you are talking about?
