Assignment #1
Due Friday 9/12
Note: The "Problems" should be doable by hand, but you can
always use Matlab to do computations. However, when explanations,
arguments, "show that ..." are called for, you need to include your written
answer in English.
Also: Please try to minimize the amount of paper your solution
uses. You can copy a few numbers by hand, sometimes, to save a page-long
printout with only those few numbers.
From text (Cheney&Kincaid, 4th ed.):
§3.1: Problems: # 2, 4, 9, 12, 14ab, 15, 16 (Note that answers
to some of these are in the back of the book.)
§3.1: Computer Problems: # 2, 3, 5 (Essentially one program
can be used for all of these. Turn in that program.)
§3.2: Problems: # 1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 19, 34, 41, 42 (Again, some
answers are in back...)
§3.2: Computer Problems: # 4, 14, 16 and redo 2, 3 from Computer
Problems §3.1 using Newton's method. (Essentially one program can
be used for all of these. Turn in that program. Some answers
are in back...)
