Text: Thomas' Calculus 10th ed.
Web Site: http://www.cs.uaf.edu/~bueler/

The Course:   We will cover chapters 6 (logarithms and exponentials), 7 (integration techniques), 8 (sequences and series), and 9 (polar coordinates).  You are expected to ask questions in class about recent lecture or homework assignments.  Such questions are a great use of the class' time as you are not likely to be the only one with that question!

The Grade:  Three fourths (75%) of your grade will be determined by  four hours of exams:

Exam # 1
Exam # 2
Final Exam
Wednesday, Oct. 15 (one hour in class)
Wednesday, Nov. 19 (one hour in class)
Thursday, Dec. 18  10:15am-12:15 (two hours)
The final exam will have two halves.  One half will cover new material.  One half will cover the entire course.  I will drop the lowest of all four hour-long equally weighted exams.  One fourth (25%) of the grade will be determined by approximately 10 quizzes.   These will be 20 to 30 minute in-class quizzes every non-midterm Tuesday, starting on 9/16.  On Mondays you will tell me how to write the quiz and I will in part follow your advice.  There will be weekly homework assignments, typically distributed on Wednesdays, which will not be collected.  They will contain many odd problems, for which the answers appear in the back of the book, and a few even problems.  When I assign an even problem it is a strong hint to ask about that kind of example in class.
The course grade will be determined by points on the exams and quizzes, according to the following schedule:

Percent
90 - 100 %
79 - 89 %
68 - 78 %
57 - 67 %
0 - 56 %
Grade
A
B
C
D
F

Prerequisite:
Math 200 is the prerequisite.  If you received a "D" in Math 200 I recommend repeating that course instead of moving on to Math 201.

Policies and makeup exams:   The department has reasonable policies on incompletes, late withdrawals, early final examinations, etc.  See http://www.dms.uaf.edu/dms/Policies.html .  You are covered by the UAF Honor Code (p. 22 of the catalog and at http://www.uaf.edu/catalog/current/undergrad/regs3.html#Student_Code_of_Conduct .)
I will create makeup versions of Exam #1 and #2 if necessary, provided I have a convincing reason to do so at least two class days before the exam.  The makeup must occur no later than two class days after the exam date.

Resources:  Don't go a semester without taking advantage of  the "Mathlab".  This is a study room and tutoring center in Chapman 305.  Find the hours posted there.  It is staffed by advanced students who can be quite helpful.  If doing math homework gets lonely go there to find fellow sufferers.

On Calculators and Computers:   Please use them on homework!  They will never be required and they will not be allowed on exams or quizzes.  I strongly recommend that technical majors build facility with a mathematical computer language (Mathematica, MathCAD or especially Matlab).  For instance, see the Integrator.  I suspect that using technology will generally not save you time in Math 201, but will help you learn!  No calculating tools other than your head are allowed on quizzes and exams.  No sliderules either.
