Howdy all,
In case you missed it, there was the first ACM meeting of the
semester on Thursday at 1:00pm in Chapman 106. The following is a brief
synopsis of all that was discussed along with contact info for more
information on each item.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Becoming a club
A sign up sheet for the club was sent around. This is mainly for
us to get recognized by ASUAF as an official club so that we can get
funding. Hopefully we will get this all turned in within a few days and
can be an official club. Once we become and official club, we can apply
for funding through the Club Council. To do that, though, we will need a
club council representative to go to the Club Council meeting. If you
are
interested in being the ACM club council rep, please contact James at
fsjfg@uaf.edu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft goodies
Sherman Watts, our official "Microsoft .Net evangelist" came to
the meeting bearing information and gifts from Microsoft. More software,
knives, magazines, and T-Shirts packed into itty bitty blocks were just
some of the possible goodies to be picked up. Sherman also mentioned
that
if you have a good idea for a project that you wish to do, and you need
some Microsoft resources to do it, then talk to Sherman and he might be
able to get some stuff donated from Microsoft. Microsoft seems pretty
serious about giving away stuff to educational groups (see some of the
previous minutes for a listing of other Microsoft goodies the ACM has).
If
you would like to get in on some of this stuff, contact Sherman at
fsssw@uaf.edu.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Wearable computers
One of the major projects shaping up for this semester is the
wearable computers project. It sounds like the student chapter from the
IEEE is interested in joining forces with us and helping with the
hardware
side of things. Some representatives from their student group should be
at
our next meeting (in two weeks). Some ideas about the direction of the
project and what the group wishes to work on were bantered about. If you
wish to get involved with the project, please contact Chris at
chris@nomadicevolution.net.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Reference book wish list
The reference book wish-list is coming into its final stages. If
there are any books that you would particularly like to see in the NT
lab,
contact Eric by this Sunday at ftesd@uaf.edu. Also contact him (I hate
referring to myself in the third person), if you have any good ideas for
good reference books for the following areas:
		-VB
		-VBA
		-Software Engineering reference
		-Documentation Reference
		-Design Reference
		-UNIX/LINUX reference (or Windows reference).
		-HTML reference.
		-MFC reference.
-Any other book you would like to see in the lab.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Visual Studio tutorial
-A quickly approaching project is the help session/materials for
Visual Studio. This will be a lab tutorial/reference/resource list for
students who are unfamiliar with Visual Studio or would like to maybe
learn some new things about Visual Studio. This tutorial will probably
occur in the next few weeks, so if you are interested in helping out
with
creating the materials, editing, or presenting, please contact James at
fsjfg@uaf.edu.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Website
Oh, and the new website is up and running. It is still located at
www.cs.uaf.edu/~acm, but it has a much better look and feel than it did
previously. Check it out. Send any comments/suggestions on the webpage
to
the webmasters located on the page... errr, send them to either Sherman
at
fsssw@uaf.edu or Beau at beaugriggs@hotmail.com.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Misc. News
In terms of news and reminders, James spoke about some of the
projects were are thinking of doing this semester/next year (mainly the
programming competitions) and some news about the NT lab possibly
becoming
the Linux lab next year. If you have strong opinions or need more
information about any of this news, contact James at fsjfg@uaf.edu.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

That is all there is for now. There will be another meeting in two
weeks. If you have any changes/additions to this information, please
email
me(Eric) at ftesd@uaf.edu.

			  Eric Davis
