Overview of Robotics & 3D Printing
CS
480: Robotics & 3D Printing Lecture, Dr. Lawlor
Here's a visual diagram summarizing what I hope to cover in this
class. Clearly, there's a ton of stuff listed!
The tan boxes are the foundational technologies used in each field.
The limiting factors currently are:
- 3D Printing: print speed vs surface finish, curl, support
material
- Subtractive CNC machining: workholding, chip handling,
toolpath planning & accessibility
- Teleoperated mobile robots: human/computer interface, network
connectivity
- Autonomous vehicles: sensing and control in open environments,
battery life
A good summary of the state of the art in mobile robotics was the
August 2015 Fab11 conference
panel on Making Robots, including speakers from Boston Dynamics,
DARPA, Kiva, MIT, and Harvard. It's an hour long video,
but it's worth watching!
