MySQL is a popular free database implementation.  It's got a decent tutorial, but it's really long. 

I've got a super-condensed tutorial ("type this now") in the README of the sample code below.  Here's some of my sample MySQL code in C and Perl (Directory, Zip, Tar-gzip).

You can install MySQL on your Linux or Windows machine.  But I've also posted a small pre-built QEMU Linux virtual machine with MySQL already installed (32MB .zip QEMU x86 virtual machine).  This should let you try out MySQL without having to go through the fairly painful setup process.
