Languages Survey Results

Here are the results of the Languages Survey that was given in class on Friday, January 23, 2009. Thirteen students took the survey. Results are presented only in aggregate form; no student names are given.

A. Experience in listed languages

The table below summarizes the answers to this part. Each of the six columns headed by a number gives the number of people who rated themselves at that level. If a language was left blank on a survey form, this was taken as a “0&rdquo rating. If a rating between two values was given, then the higher value was used (e.g., “2–3” was recorded as “3”). If a cell is blank below, then no one rated themselves at that level.

Language 0 1 2 3 4 5
Java 1 6 2 3 1
C# 5 4 1 2 1
Perl 8 3     1 1
Python 7 5   1
Ruby 10 3
Javascript 1 7 4 1
Haskell 11 2
Caml/OCaml 11 2
Lisp (any dialect) 10 1 1 1
Forth 12 1
Smalltalk 11 2
Prolog 12 1

B. Experience in other languages

Answers to this question were inconsistently stated, and so it is difficult to summarize the results numerically. Here are the languages that were listed by more than one person.

C. Languages students would like to learn more about

Here are all the languages that were listed, in order of number of people who mentioned them.

Language Number Listing
Python 5
Ruby 4
Haskell 3
Javascript 3
C# 2
Java 2
Perl 2
PHP 2
Caml 1
Clipper 1
Cobol 1
Forth 1
Fortran 1
Lisp 1
Objective C 1
Pascal 1
Prolog 1

In addition, three students indicated that their interests were very general (e.g., “all languages”).
